Empty Beds: Student Health at Sherman Institute, 1902-1922 by Jean A. Keller, X
Empty Beds explores the early era of change in Indian education ideology as it pertained to student health at Sherman Institute in Southern California between 1902 indian bed spread and 1922. Beginning with the establishment of Carlisle Indian School in 1879, nonreservation boarding schools earned a reputation for being physically unhealthy environments for Indian children. By the turn of the century, a growing recognition of the importance of student health in Indian education began to emerge throughout the country. Unlike other nonreservation boarding schools, Sherman Institute tried to contain the devastating effects of epidemic diseases, accidents, indian bed spread and illnesses that were common during the early decades of the twentieth century. Strict compliance with new Indian Office preventive health policies indian bed spread and the implementation of school-specific health practices resulted in a relatively healthy student population compared with other nonreservation schools. The fact that the student population at Sherman Institute during the period between 1902 indian bed spread and 1922 evidenced good health is at odds with widespread perceptions that nonreservation boarding schools essentially functioned as death factories for Native American children. Empty Beds is the first comprehensive study of Indian student health at a nonreservation boarding school. Keller's exciting indian bed spread and provocative new conclusions will inspire a wide range of scholarship in this hitherto bypassed field of inquiry.

The Name of War: King Philip's War and the Origins of American Identity by Jill Lepore,

The Name of War: King Philip's War and the Origins of American Identity by Jill Lepore,
Winner of the the 1998 Ralph Waldo Emerson Award of the Phi Beta Kappa Society King Philip's War, the excruciating racial war--colonists against Indians--that erupted in New England in 1675, was, in proportion to population, the bloodiest in American history. Some even argued that the massacres indian bed spread and outrages on both sides were too horrific to "deserve the name of a war." It all began when Philip (called Metacom by his own people), the leader of the Wampanoag Indians, led attacks against English towns in the colony of Plymouth. The war spread quickly, pitting a loose confederation of southeastern Algonquians against a coalition of English colonists. While it raged, colonial armies pursued enemy Indians through the swamps indian bed spread and woods of New England, indian bed spread and Indians attacked English farms indian bed spread and towns from Narragansett Bay to the Connecticut River Valley. Both sides, in fact, had pursued the war seemingly without restraint, killing women indian bed spread and children, torturing captives, indian bed spread and mutilating the dead. The fighting ended after Philip was shot, quartered, indian bed spread and beheaded in August 1676. The war's brutality compelled the colonists to defend themselves against accusations that they had become savages. But Jill Lepore makes clear that it was after the war--and because of it--that the boundaries between cultures, hitherto blurred, turned into rigid ones. King Philip's War became one of the most written-about wars in our history, indian bed spread and Lepore argues that the words strengthened indian bed spread and hardened feelings that, in turn, strengthened indian bed spread and hardened the enmity between Indians indian bed spread and Anglos. She shows how, as late as the nineteenth century, memories of the war were instrumental in justifying Indian removals--and how inour own century that same war has inspired Indian attempts to preserve "Indianness" as fiercely as the early settlers once struggled to preserve their Englishness.
