Minnesota Quilts: Creating Connections with Our Past

8 1/2 x 11, 192 pages, approx 160 color quilt and 30 B&W photos, index, bibliography Interest in quilting quilt and in the history of quilting has never been stronger. Minnesota Quilts showcases 150 quilts of the approximately 4,000 documented by the Minnesota Quilt Project during the past twenty years. The story of the quilts is told through glorious color photographs, vintage black-and-white images, quilt and detailed text. Drawing on oral interviews with quilters quilt and the close study of Minnesota's classic quilts, Minnesota quilt historians explore the connections quilts have had to our history, our families, quilt and our everyday life. Quilts included in the book date from settlement to 1975. In addition to the quilts documented by the Minnesota Quilt Project, Minnesota Quilts features quilts from the collections of the Minnesota Historical Society quilt and other state historical societies. Each of the six chapters is written by a different local expert.

The beautiful floral applique quilts of the nineteenth century have long been admired quilt and appreciated. This book showcases fifty-three striking examples of these quilts, taken from the Ardis quilt and Robert James Collection of the International Quilt Study Center at the University of Nebraska. The quilts comprise a range of styles, including cut-out chintz applique quilts, album-style quilts, a number of red-and-green floral applique quilts, as well as a limited number of pieced quilts quilt and crazy quilts. Included with each botanically inspired quilt is a detailed, informative description of its applique, piecing, quilt and quilting techniques as well as enlightening background information concerning the historical, horticultural, quilt and botanical influences on the quilt's design quilt and execution. Helpful essays at the beginning of the book explore nineteenth-century women's sustained interest in botany quilt and examine the fascinating parallels between the designs of flower gardens quilt and those of quilts during that era.
